Programma

Turkije beleeft een onstuimige tijd. Nog maar zes jaar geleden leek het land dichterbij Europa te kruipen en zich langzaam te ontwikkelen tot een ‘model dat islam en democratie verenigt’. Het land verviel in conflict, vluchtelingenstromen en ontmanteling van democratie en vrijheid. Turkije werd een starre autocratie naar binnen, een boos land naar buiten.

Hoe werken externe factoren in op Turkije? Welke invloed heeft de onrust in de Arabische wereld? Hoe kon die chaos overslaan naar Turkije, en daarmee ook Europa? Vervolgens vragen we ons af of Turkijes draai naar een autocratie alleen het gevolg was van onmacht met deze omstandigheden, of ook voortkwam uit de machtswellust van één man. Welke rol speelt de geschiedenis en waar staan wij in Europa in dit verhaal?

Sprekers

Olaf Koens is een journalist en correspondent voor RTL-Nieuws voor het Midden-Oosten. Daarvoor was hij verslaggever in Rusland en de voormalige Sovjet-Unie. Dit deed hij voor de Volkskrant en RTL Nieuws. Daarnaast is hij de schrijver van de boeken Koorddansen in de Kaukasus, Oorlog en Kermis en Paarden vliegen businessclass.

Lucas Waagmeester is sinds 2009 correspondent voor de NOS en Nieuwsuur. Hij werkte in Zuid-Afrika, India, Pakistan en Afghanistan. Sinds 2014 was hij met zijn gezin gestationeerd in Istanbul, Turkije. Vanaf juni 2020 is hij VS-correspondent in Washington. Zijn nieuwste boek ‘Op Drift’ is net verschenen.
